VIRUS? WORM? TROJAN HORSE?

Virus
A virus is a program that attaches itself to an existing program, sometimes called a "host" program. A virus can be devastating to your computer! It can ruin software, files, and yep, even hardware-the hard drive, mother board, or memory.

Worm
A worm is a stand-alone program that keeps reproducing or replicating itself after it gets into a computer. This will use tremendous system resources eventually, and can tie up memory. After a period of time, a worm can use up so much of the computer's memory that the system will just crash!

Trojan Horse
A Trojan Horse is usually something that looks useful or interesting, like a screen saver, or a simple program that might be helpful. However, it really has hidden components that will do things that you don't want. Usually, it will lead to doing things that damage the computer or software.

Ransom Ware
Ransom Ware is now a growing problem too. It is very important to not open email that you are not certain is safe. Sometimes emails will indicate a delivery attempt was made for a package from: USPS, UPS, FedX, etc. These are usually not valid and if opened will install the Ransom Ware! I can install software that will stop the RansomWare in most cases.

How does my computer get these things?

Usually computers contract a virus or one of these other "bad programs", through the E-mail attachments, open internet E-mail, or downloads.

How do I avoid getting these things into my computer?

I always recommend that you put a number in the subject line, starting with something like, 0011, and then add 1 to it each time you send mail to that person. This way everyone that you E-mail will probably have a different number added to their mail in the subject line. If you ask everyone that E-mails you to send a number in the subject of their E-mail, and you do that too, it's fairly easy to determine if a letter is actually from your friend or a virus.{ Many viruses will load on a computer and not be visible, and will send itself to everyone in your address book.} Once you've done this for a while, you'll soon know off the top of your head what the number should be for your next E-mail. If you write a lot of E-mails you can always go back and check the old mail and sent mail folders to get the last number you used. After you start doing this, it's simple to know if you're about to get a virus from a friend's computer. If there is no number in the box, DON'T OPEN THE E-MAIL! Contact your friend and see if they sent an E-mail and forgot to include a number. If that's what happened, then read the mail. If they say, "No, I didn't send you an E-mail for over a week now." Or something like that, DO NOT OPEN THE MAIL! Tell them that their computer probably has a virus.

How do I know if I have a virus?

Hopefully, you have a virus scanning software on your computer! These include something like Norton's Anti-virus, Trend's PC-Cillian, McAfee's Virus Scan, and many others. These programs work very well, BUT, they must be updated, usually every week, to keep them working properly. Also, check at MicroSoft's web site for the most recent updates for Windows and Office. It's very important to keep these programs current to avoid problems! If your software indicates that your machine has a virus. Either follow the procedure to delete the appropriate files, if you know how, or contact the software manufacturer for help. Also, MicroSoft Product Support Services is a good source of information on removing infected files. In some cases, you may have recieved an e-mail about a virus. Be VERY careful! Many viruses are spread this way. You'll be told to foward the notice to your friends. Actually, the notice may be a virus itself! The most important thing in virus protection is to be active in you protection and prevention!

For Laptop computers it is very important to note. The computer should not be used for more than a couple hours at a time. This will also allow for you to have a break and rest your fingers and wrists. If it is used for more than 2 hours at a time, parts will tend to overheat. Special fans are available for under laptops to cool them. Even the full size tower computers have issues with heat. The towers have more space around the various boards and parts, and have more and larger fans. So, it must be appreciated that a laptop will get hot and heat has always been the primary problem for computers. KEEP YOUR COMPUTER CLEAN! Always clean things when they are turned off and unplugged! Use canned air to blow the dust and dirt out of keyboards and all interior areas. Use only specially designed cleaners on the monitor or viewing screen. Coatings can be damaged very easily! Taking apart a laptop computer is much more difficult than it is for a desktop or tower model. If you do take it apart to clean inside there are some things to remember. If you remove the heat sink from the processor, USE HEAT SINK GLUE to reattach it and prevent overheating problems, VERY IMPORTANT! Only a few spray electronic cleaners will not damage the electronic boards. These boards are made of plastics, which are made with oil based products. The cleaners, degrease, to clean which drys the parts extremely. This can result in the board literally grumbling. BE CAREFUL of what you use. I had a neighbor with a laptop that overheated regularly. In order to complete his work he frequently put the computer in a zip lock bag and layed it in the snow for several hours to cool down so he could finish his work.
